THE BARBER OF SEVILLE with SAN JOSE OPERA

After begging, screaming, and crying for 3 + years, I've been hired by the fabulous opera company of San Jose to play the role of Bertha (the grumpy old maid) in the Rossini comedy The Barber of Seville.  This opera is full of ROCK STARS. Everyone's really good--it's ridiculous! The show is double cast, so make sure if you're coming to see me you come on my cast's night.

I am performing on the following dates: 11/18, 11/21, 11/30, and 12/3

For information about the cast, show, and for tickets please visit Opera San Jose's website here

SOLO CONCERT with Old First Concerts on Decemeber 15th

I've been asked to perform on the Old First Concert Series, and I'm thrilled! It will be a great mix of old and new repetoire and will feature my fabulous mother, Inara Morgenstern, on piano, as well as guest star vocalists Darla Wigginton and Lara Bruckmann from Girlkulture, and local music genius Rob Reich on accordeon and piano.

Here is the great blurb their publicist wrote (heck, I'd come see it!):

CLASSICAL CABARET

Ariela Morgenstern, mezzo-soprano and Inara Morgenstern, piano                               Darla Wigginton and Lara Brockman, vocals; Rob Reich, accordion and piano

Ariela Morgenstern has steadily built a glowing reputation across the spectrum of musical theater genres, from opera to new music to art songs.  Tonight, she brings the golden age of cabaret back to dazzling and enchanting life, in a program that samples, and evokes, such classic and definitive artists as Kurt Weill, Marlene Dietrich, and the Andrews Sisters, with compositions ranging from "Pirate Jenny" and "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen" to "Someone to Watch Over Me."  A selection of jazz, modern musical, and swing era numbers round out a remarkable musical evening.

The concert will be performed  at the Old First Church (1751 Sacramento St. at Van Ness Ave. in San Francisco) at 8pm on December 15th, 2006. For more information and tickets visit the Old First Concerts website.

I will be singing a set of songs waxing poetic and not-so-poetic on the topic of Nightmares, Witches, and Bitches, including Miss Hanigan's aria (aka "Little Girls" from Annie!), Billy Collin' piece "Flames", Jason Robert Brown's song "Surabaya Santa", "Black Max", and "Hurr Hop Hop Hop!" (only the mezzos out there would understand)

Where? Knuth Hall at SFSU. Where's that? Look here.

The Cheerleader's Progress

rakecostumeThe beginning of June marked the end of West Bay Opera's production of Stravinsky's The Rakes Progress, which was a great show and a hoot to work on.  And because of the genius that is costume designer Richard Battle, however brief the role, my portrayal of Mother Goose will be forever etched into the memories of that unsuspecting opera-going audience thanks to his Fabulous costume!

In case you missed it, you can still catch two of the production’s
rakefromwbosmall phenomenal singers perform in the Bay Area soon.  Rhoslyn Jones, who played an Anne Trulove with a voice you could fall in love with, will be playing Frasquita in Carmen in San Francisco Opera's upcoming season, and Kirk Eichelberger, the dashing Nick Shadow, will be performing as Don Basilio with me as Berta in The Barber of Seville in San Jose Opera’s upcoming season.

My daily trek on 101 South is not over, however, for I’m in the middle of rehearsals for Vanities, a new musical being created and performed at TheatreWorks. I’m understudying one of the three wildly talented women that star in the show, and I’m telling you: SEE THIS SHOW. It’s funny as all hell, has great music, and will undoubtedly have a big life beyond this run so you can boast to your friends that you saw it first before the rest of the world did. Here’s a better description from www.theatreworks.org:

vanities Chronicling the comic journey of three vivacious Texas teens from cheerleaders to sorority sisters to housewives, liberated women and beyond, this tangy tale of coming-of-age in the '60s and '70s is a musical scrapbook of an era that had to be lived to be believed. With a tunefully evocative score by David Kirshenbaum (Summer of '42) and Jack Heifner's hilarious adaptation of his long-running off-Broadway smash, Vanities offers a snapshot-sharp portrait of the lives, loves, disappointments, and dreams of best friends caught up in times that are a-changin'.
